Industrial pellets
Industrial pellets are a solid biofuel in the form of cylindrical granules produced by pressing milled biomass (typically wood, but also agricultural or mixed biomass) under high pressure. Compared with premium household pellets, industrial pellets are subject to less stringent quality requirements – they can have higher moisture and ash content and more variable chemical composition, while still providing good energy density and suitability for automated combustion. They are primarily intended for larger boiler plants, power plants, district heating systems, and industrial processes where combustion equipment and flue‑gas cleaning systems can accommodate a wider fuel-quality range. Pellets are suitable for bulk storage and transport, with stable parameters for feeding and combustion in large-scale furnaces.
Category
- Biofuels
- Solid biomass – pelletized fuel for energy and industrial applications
- Renewable energy source, mainly based on wood or agro biomass, with varying degrees of processing depending on the raw material
Variations
- Industrial wood pellets (from sawdust, shavings, wood waste with higher bark content)
- Agro pellets (from agricultural biomass – straw, husks, mixed plant residues)
- Mixed pellets (blends of wood and agro biomass or other technical blends)
- Pellets of different industrial quality classes (based on internal or market specifications, with higher ash content than household pellets)
Applications In The Industry
Energy systems
In energy systems, industrial pellets are used as fuel in large biomass boilers, cogeneration plants, and district heating systems equipped with robust combustion and flue‑gas cleaning technologies. They are suitable for:
- central boiler plants supplying district heating networks in small and large cities;
- cogeneration plants producing both electricity and heat for local grids;
- power and heating plants that use blends of pellets with other biomass fuels or co‑fire pellets with fossil fuels.
Due to their good bulk density and uniform granule size, industrial pellets can be reliably metered via mechanical and pneumatic conveying systems, enabling a high degree of automation in boiler houses and energy plants. Less stringent quality requirements compared with household pellets allow the use of a broader spectrum of locally available biomass, provided that furnaces, grates, burners, and filter systems (multicyclones, electrostatic precipitators, bag filters) are properly designed.
Industry
In industrial applications, industrial pellets are used as a main or supplementary fuel in large boilers supplying steam and heat for production processes. Typical applications include:
- wood-processing and pulp-and-paper industries, where in‑house biomass is pelletized and used on site;
- food and agro‑food industries, where pellets provide process heat and steam for drying, thermal treatment, and sterilization;
- cement and other energy‑intensive industries, often in co‑firing with fossil fuels (coal, petcoke) to partially replace conventional fuels.
Industrial pellets are usually delivered in bulk, stored in silos with automated filling and discharge systems. Large industrial boiler houses and energy plants are designed to accommodate variations in pellet quality (moisture, ash, chemical composition) by using appropriate grates, burners, and flue‑gas cleaning systems, ensuring flexible, reliable, and long‑term use of this biofuel.
Benefits Of Use
- Ability to utilize a wide range of locally available biomass (wood and agro biomass) by pelletizing it into a standardized fuel form
- High suitability for automation in large boiler plants, energy facilities, and industrial sites
- Potentially lower fuel costs than heating oil, coal, or natural gas, especially with long‑term contracts and the use of by‑products/waste streams
- Reduced fossil‑fuel consumption and lower CO₂ emissions compared with reference fossil fuels, while valorizing industrial and agricultural residues that would otherwise be underutilized
