Fatty alcohol ethoxylates - AEO - AE

Fatty alcohol ethoxylates (often designated as AEO or AE) are nonionic surfactants produced by reacting fatty alcohols with ethylene oxide. They typically appear as clear to slightly hazy liquids or waxy solids depending on carbon chain length and degree of ethoxylation. They provide excellent wetting, emulsifying and dispersing power, as well as effective degreasing with controlled or low foam. Their nonionic character gives high compatibility with anionic, cationic and amphoteric surfactants, making them key components in household and industrial cleaners, personal care products, textile and leather processing, as well as agricultural formulations.

Source

  • based on fatty alcohols (C₁₂–C₁₈ or broader range) derived from natural oils and fats (palm, coconut, tallow) or petrochemical routes
  • the fatty alcohol reacts with ethylene oxide under controlled conditions to add a defined number of ethoxy (EO) units per molecule
  • by selecting the type of fatty alcohol and ethoxylation degree, products with specific HLB values and foam profiles are obtained
  • supplied as neat ethoxylates or as tailored solutions/blends optimized for targeted applications

Variations

  • different carbon chain lengths (e.g. C₁₂–C₁₄, C₁₂–C₁₅, C₁₆–C₁₈) to fine‑tune lipophilicity and cloud point
  • a range of EO units (e.g. 3, 5, 7, 9, 10, 12 EO) to control HLB, water solubility and foaming behavior
  • low‑foaming and high‑foaming grades for specific requirements (machine washing, CIP, manual cleaning)
  • “narrow‑range” and “broad‑range” ethoxylates depending on EO distribution and desired stability/emulsifying performance

Applications In The Industry

Household chemicals industry

Fatty alcohol ethoxylates are widely used in liquid and powder laundry detergents, dishwashing liquids, all‑purpose cleaners and specialty hard‑surface cleaners. They act as co‑surfactants that boost the degreasing power of anionic surfactants, improve wetting and help prevent soil redeposition. Low‑foaming grades are particularly suitable for machine washing and professional systems, delivering strong cleaning with controlled foam and easy rinsing.

Industrial cleaning industry

In industrial cleaning, fatty alcohol ethoxylates are key nonionic surfactants in alkaline and neutral degreasers, CIP systems, metal parts cleaners and vehicle wash formulations. They provide powerful wetting, emulsification of oils and lubricants, and stable emulsions even at high electrolyte concentrations. Thanks to their nonionic character, they are stable over a wide pH range and well suited for high‑temperature cleaning processes where they retain detergency.

Personal care industry

In personal care, fatty alcohol ethoxylates serve as mild nonionic surfactants, emulsifiers and solubilizers in shampoos, body washes, creams, lotions and skin‑care products. They help build stable oil‑in‑water emulsions, improve distribution and solubilization of fragrances and lipophilic actives, and reduce irritation from stronger anionic surfactants in cleansing formulations. Selected ethoxylates contribute to desirable sensory feel, easy rinsing and viscosity stability.

Textile industry

In the textile industry, fatty alcohol ethoxylates function as wetting, scouring, dispersing and washing agents in pretreatment (degreasing, desizing), dyeing and finishing processes. Their ability to enhance penetration of water and chemicals into fibers and textile structures enables more uniform dyeing and more efficient removal of impurities. Low‑foaming grades are particularly useful in continuous processes, improving rinsability and process stability.

Leather industry

In leather processing, fatty alcohol ethoxylates are used in degreasing of raw hides, in wet‑white and wet‑blue stages, and in dyeing and fatliquoring formulations. They emulsify natural fats and oils, ensure uniform wetting and improve penetration of tanning agents and dyes into the fiber structure. They are combined with anionic and nonionic co‑surfactants to achieve stable emulsions and controlled effects on leather strength and softness.

Agricultural formulations industry

In agricultural formulations, fatty alcohol ethoxylates are applied as nonionic wetting agents, emulsifiers and adjuvants in herbicides, fungicides, insecticides and biostimulants. They improve leaf wetting, reduce surface tension and enhance uptake of active substances into plant tissue. Their good compatibility with ionic additives and stability in hard water supports reliable, homogeneous spray solutions with better coverage and increased treatment efficiency.

Benefits Of Use

  • broad range of HLB values and performance profiles enables precise tailoring of cleaning, personal care and agrochemical formulations
  • nonionic character provides high compatibility with other surfactant types, electrolytes and actives across a wide pH range
  • excellent wetting, emulsifying and degreasing power, with the option to choose low‑ or high‑foaming grades to match process needs
  • availability of grades based on renewable raw materials (vegetable fatty alcohols) supports development of more sustainable products with improved environmental profiles
