Ethyl acetate
Ethyl acetate is an organic solvent (an ester of acetic acid and ethanol) with low viscosity, medium‑high volatility and a characteristic mild fruity odor. It is colorless, readily soluble in most organic solvents and partially miscible with water. Offering excellent solvency for a broad range of polymers (nitrocellulose, acrylics, polyurethanes, chlorinated polymers), ethyl acetate is one of the key solvents in the coatings, printing inks, adhesives, packaging and certain electronics applications. Thanks to its favorable evaporation profile, it ensures fast film drying while maintaining good workability and high gloss of the final product.
Source
- produced industrially by esterification of acetic acid with ethanol in the presence of a catalyst
- feedstocks can be petrochemical or, increasingly, bio‑based, depending on the manufacturer
- followed by distillation and purification to achieve high purity and stable specifications
- supplied as a colorless liquid, often in several purity grades tailored to different industry requirements
Variations
- standard technical‑grade ethyl acetate – for coatings, inks, adhesives and general industrial use
- high‑purity (low‑residue) grades – for more sensitive applications, including some electronics and specialty coatings
- low‑odor and improved odor profiles – for adhesives, packaging and consumer‑proximate applications
- bio‑based ethyl acetate – produced from bio‑ethanol for customers focused on sustainability and CO₂ footprint reduction
Applications In The Industry
Paints and coatings industry
In the coatings industry, ethyl acetate is used as a primary or co‑solvent in nitrocellulose, acrylic, polyurethane and other systems where fast drying and high gloss are required. Its combination of relatively fast evaporation and good solvency enables smooth, hard films with reduced risk of haze and defects. It is particularly important in automotive refinish coatings, wood lacquers, metal coatings and decorative spray products, where it supports fast handling and high line efficiency.
Printing inks and printing industry
Ethyl acetate is a key solvent in flexographic and gravure printing inks, especially for packaging films and lamination systems. Its evaporation rate allows rapid drying of the print at high press speeds, with good ink transfer and viscosity control. Compatibility with nitrocellulose and acrylic resins enables ink formulations with good adhesion, gloss and resistance on substrates such as BOPP, PET, PE and aluminum laminates.
Adhesives and sealants industry
In adhesives, particularly contact, lamination and specialty industrial adhesives, ethyl acetate provides fast strength development and reduced handling time. Its strong solvency for polyurethane and chloroprene systems contributes to optimal viscosity, full resin dissolution and uniform film formation. Fast evaporation is especially valuable in packaging and footwear adhesives, where high throughput and short bonding cycles are essential.
Packaging converting industry
In packaging converting, ethyl acetate is widely used in overprint and lamination lacquers, coatings and adhesives for multilayer structures. It enables rapid drying of coated layers before rewinding and lamination, reducing the risk of blocking and film haziness. Due to its favorable odor and volatility profile, it is suitable for outer and interlayer coatings on films and paper, with careful formulation and process design for food‑contact related applications (always in line with relevant regulations).
Electronics industry
In the electronics industry, ethyl acetate is used as a solvent in certain protective coatings, varnishes and cleaners for components and printed circuit boards. Its fast drying is beneficial in processes requiring short dwell times and rapid component handling. When used in highly purified grades, it provides low residue and minimal retention on surfaces, which is important for the stability and reliability of delicate electronic structures.
Benefits Of Use
- very good solvency for a wide range of resins and polymers, combined with short drying times
- favorable evaporation profile for high‑speed production lines in coatings, inks and adhesives
- clean, relatively mild odor and good compatibility with other solvents and co‑solvents
- availability of both petrochemical and bio‑based grades, suitable for sustainable and regulation‑driven applications
