Acetic acid

Acetic acid (ethanoic acid, CH₃COOH) is an organic monocarboxylic acid with a characteristic pungent odor and sour taste. In industry it is used as a pH regulator, mild chelating agent, solvent and key intermediate for the synthesis of acetates, vinyl acetate monomer and esters. Thanks to its high water solubility and compatibility with many surfactants, it is widely applied in cleaning products and in the processing of textiles, leather, plastics and rubber.

Source

  • industrial production via methanol carbonylation (Monsanto, Cativa process)
  • manufacture by oxidation of acetaldehyde or ethanol
  • biological origin through ethanol fermentation by Acetobacter species
  • supplied as glacial acetic acid (≈99%) or standardized aqueous solutions of various strengths

Variations

  • technical grade acetic acid for general industrial applications
  • pharmaceutical and food grades where high purity is required
  • blends with other acids for specialized cleaning and process formulations
  • acetate buffer systems (acetic acid / sodium acetate) for accurate pH control

Applications In The Industry

Household chemicals industry

In the household chemicals industry, acetic acid is used in all-purpose and sanitary cleaners, dishwashing and laundry detergents, as well as glass and kitchen surface cleaners. It enables effective removal of limescale, soap scum and rust, improves rinsing and reduces residue and water spotting. Its natural origin and good biodegradability make it suitable for more environmentally friendly, “green” formulations.

Industrial cleaning industry

In industrial cleaning, acetic acid is applied for removing mineral deposits and oxides in CIP systems, for descaling heat exchangers, pipelines and tanks, and for cleaning equipment in food, beverage and process industries. It is also used for conditioning metal, plastic and glass surfaces before coating and painting, providing controlled acidification with a lower corrosion potential than strong inorganic acids.

Leather industry

In the leather industry, acetic acid is used for acidification during pickling, chrome tanning and retanning, as well as for neutralizing alkaline residues from upstream processes. Accurate pH control with acetic acid influences dye uptake, shade levelness, softness and fullness of leather and the stability of finishing operations.

Plastics industry

In the plastics industry, acetic acid is a key raw material for the production of vinyl acetate monomer (VAM), the basis for PVAc, EVA and related copolymers used in adhesives, coatings and films. It is also employed in the synthesis of acetic esters as solvents and in cleaning processing equipment such as molds and extruders from deposits, pigments and additives while controlling process pH.

Rubber industry

In the rubber industry, acetic acid is used to coagulate natural and synthetic latex to obtain rubber crumb suitable for further processing. Its derivatives participate in plasticizer and auxiliary formulations that affect processability, elasticity and stability of rubber compounds. Use in equipment cleaning and conditioning supports stable, reproducible product quality.

Textile industry

In the textile industry, acetic acid is a standard agent for acidifying dyeing and washing baths, especially when using reactive, acid and disperse dyes. It is applied for neutralizing alkaline residues after mercerizing and pre-treatment and for stabilizing optical brighteners and auxiliaries. Controlled pH reduction improves dye uptake and fastness, reduces fiber damage and contributes to a pleasant fabric handle.

Benefits Of Use

  • efficient and precise pH adjustment across diverse industrial processes
  • good solubility, surfactant compatibility and metal ion complexation capability
  • relatively mild, biodegradable organic acid suitable for “green” formulations
  • broad functionality: cleaning, dyeing, tanning, latex coagulation, polymer and ester synthesis
